THE RIPA INDEX. Personifications and their attributes in five editions of the Iconologia
1992. XIV, 628 pp.
This book, the result of a project of the Iconclass team of the Department of Art History of the University of Leiden, is the first extensive index (in English) of personifications as described by Cesare Ripa in his book Iconologia. The existing indexes refer either to the names of the personifications or to single attributes.
The data were collected from five editions in three languages (Italian, Dutch and French). The book is divided in two parts. In the first part are the personifications in alphabetical order according to their Italian names with short description based upon the text of the five editions. In the second part, the words are arranged in alphabetical order and thereby it is possible to find the personifications with all the attributes, gestures etc., including the variations introduced in different texts.
The Ripa Index should not only simplify the identification of personifications in European Art particularly those of the 17th and 18th centuries, the period in which Ripa's Iconologia was widely utilised, but can also be of great help in the research of cultural- and art history, especially on symbolism.
