This book - whose author was a lawyer who became pensionary of Zeeland - is one of the most beautiful Dutch emblem books of the 17th century. The 52 engravings by different artists are closely related to contemporaneous genre painting. Like genre paintings the engravings provide visual documentation of fashion everyday life and all sorts of customs of the time.
