This book does yeoman service in moving toward a needed reintegration of the European devotional art of North and South in the fifteenth century. Although Antal, Berliner, Gombrich, Meiss, Mesnil, Panofsky, Warburg and many others have, through their own rich intellectual curiosity, knowledge, and art historical resources, done much to bring together the cruelly severed art of the Quattrocento, much still remains to be done. Ringbom's book, studded with invaluable iconographical references has achieved more in this respect than a convey of Council of Europe artistic extravaganzas.
