The series consists of a new edition of Karel van Mander’s descriptions of
the lives of the Netherlandish painters in his Schilder-boeck (Book onPainting)
of 1603-1604: Het Leven der Doorluchtighe Nederlandtsche, en Hoogh-duytsche
Schilders
(Lives of the Illustrious Netherlandish and German Painters) - fols. 196r-300v.
This edition has been supplemented by the biography of Karel van Mander himself,
which appeared in the second, otherwise unaltered, 1616-1618 edition of the
Schilder-boeck.
Volume 1: The text is reproduced in facsimile; a new paraphrase of this text
in modern Dutch by Hessel Miedema has been translated into English. This volume
has bibliographical introductions and an extensive index.

Volume 2-6: The text of the five commentary volumes is in English. These volumes
are illustrated as completely as possible: every work of art that is mentioned,
or comparable substitutes are reproduced.
Volume 6 contains an exhaustive and informative general index to the complete
set of six volumes.
